I've been following a website about the creative use of light in photography, and I've finally started to practice some of it. One of my first sessions was on Tuesday night - a simple setup to be able to capture incense smoke in a photo. My favorites from the set are behind the cut.

This one is a bit out of focus; it's a bit overexposed; and it's strikingly haunting.

This is one of my favorites from this shoot - some of the billow here almost looks like the neck and head of a violin!

The black background here gives a wonderful sense of negative space.

This is one of my favorites out of this set too - the graceful curves of the smoke are just beautiful.

Again, I like the negative space that the black background creates.

The main thing that I'm taking away from that particular photo shoot is that I want to learn control over all of the elements captured in the photo. There are plenty of shots in the photostream that contain a red background; unfortunately, it was shot against a door, which provides some lines and textures that distract from the overall effect of the photo. I think that I could have done some more prep work and not had to deal with that at all.
