Yesterday I got approval to head to RailsConf, a conference for programmers who use the Ruby on Rails programming framework, to be held in Las Vegas, on the strip, on May 4-7. It will be fun, but I have a more general question for Ask Dr. LJ:

What should I do around Vegas while I'm there? I'm probably going to take a couple of days on one side or another to enjoy the change of scenery, and I want to figure out what to do. I'd like at least some of my time to be spent on photography - I hear that there are some beautiful national parks in the area. I could take in a show or two, so what would you recommend? Do people know good places to eat?

Thus far I've only looked at WikiTravel, so I've only just begun looking. But, I'd love to hear ideas from the gallery.

You need to watch the battle between the British and the pirate ships, absolutely. Drinking large drinks from glass skulls adds to the ambiance.

Are you talking about the Treasure Island hotel, or is it something else? Drinking from glass skulls sounds good to me.

Beautiful Park: Valley of Fire located about 45-50 mins from the strip.

Manmade Wonder: Hoover Dam

Strip: Tons of stuff to look at / do / see as monument to excess.

I always like to see a show when we go to Vegas too: Great shows are any of the Cirque shows, Blue Man Group, or Comedy - there are many. Tip for shows (works EXCEPT on big name shows) is you can buy tickets for half price day of show at "half price tickets"

Thanks for the pointers! I didn't realize that either of those places are so convenient to Las Vegas.

My general plan is to take in the strip and/or shows on the nights of the conference, and work in the scenic wonders before or after the conference proper. (Is anything supposed to be proper in Las Vegas?)

Ok

Sure! My general email address is this same username at gmail, or he can just comment on this post and I'll get mail about it.

Hoover dam and lake mead are a short drive from the strip and worth the price of a rental car. I love the scenery around las vegas. I never thought I would find a desert so beautiful until I was there.

As for shows- anything by Cirque is excellent. Blue Man Group is a lot of fun.
